There are plenty of places to pick up beautiful, splurgy lingerie: inviting boutiques, well-stocked department stores, tempting upscale websites. And then there’s my
personal favorite — eBay.
eBay might not be the first word that comes to mind when you think of exquisite lace underwires and sheer silk thongs, but, trust me, it’s got all that and much, much more. With a little precise hunting, you can find the most beautiful, indulgent designer lingerie for a small fraction of its list price.
“Precise” really is the key word (or is that keyword?) to getting what you want on eBay…and, indeed, not getting ripped off. Instead of hunting for something general, like, say, “black lace underwire”, I always start with an extra-specific search — like, say, “Eres soutien black lace 85B” — to find exactly what I know I want. I also try and look for items from buyers I’ve had good experiences with in the past.
I pretty much only buy styles and brands I already own, so there’s no question mark about fit, since eBay can be a risky place to experiment. There have got to be lots of pictures in the listing so I can vouch for authenticity — which is easy if you’ve already got the bra you’re staring at on the computer screen lying in your lingerie drawer. (Or in your hand! There’s nothing wrong with holding a pair of panties up to compare and contrast…unless someone walks by, trying to figure out exactly what it is you’re doing.) And I always, ALWAYS, opt for items that are NWT — New With Tags — since I confess that the idea of buying used underwear skeeves me out a little.
What sort of bargains have I found over the years? My favorite is an ornate lace Chantelle push-up bra; It retails for $105 and I got it for $17, including free shipping. But there have been lots of great finds, all from high-end designer brands like Eres, and all for way less than even the “final reductions” rack at my favorite traditional stores.
Admittedly, some of the fun of buying lingerie is usually the experience — being surrounded by beautiful things, a helpful salesperson, the tactile tissue paper wrapped around each frilly purchase — which eBay definitely doesn’t offer. But it sure does have some great deals, which, when you love lingerie as much as I do, makes it always worth a visit.
