For as loud as they are, I’d never really paid neon bras much attention. Seeing them on the racks of the lingerie department, they looked like they belonged on 18-year-old party girls, not on a 30-year-old woman. I breezed past, moving toward sensible neutrals. (After all, if I wanted something sexy, I reached for black.)
I’d like to think of that time as the dark ages. Not only have the quality of neon bras reached new heights—obliterating my teen-store associations—they’re also, dare I say, pragmatic: Careful street-style observation has shown me that a brightly colored bra instantly adds a little edge to any weekend outfit. The key is letting its shocking hue show through.
Here’s what to wear yours with:
A black, off-the-shoulder sweater. A slouchy knit feels vaguely punkish with one candy-colored strap peeking out.
A crisp button-down. A white oxford shirt looks far less conservative when you’re wearing a lime green bra—or bralette!—underneath. We love the contradiction.
A racer-back tank. Play up the tank’s sporty vibe by letting your bra’s fluorescent straps show.
Anything with a slash. Blouses with a vertical slit in the front or back seem even sexier when a flash of neon shines through.
