This may be the closest I’ll ever come to Dancing With the Stars! I met up with Emmy Award winner Randall Christensen, DWTS costume designer, when he was in NY launching his brand new collection for Miraclesuit. Think Miracle’s slimming suits with a bit of ballroom glam. The suits are sparkly and fun, and are available now on Miraclesuit for $250-$500.
Randall is exactly what I would have pictured for a Hollywood costume designer. He’s fun, energetic and works well under pressure. And with only a four day turn-around each week to customize his one of a kind creations for the stars, good thing he works well on his toes! He shared some great gossip on the show (Emmett Smith was amazing and Brooke Burke is a dream) and styling tricks that get the celebs through the show without too many fashion mishaps (the Nancy Grace exposure was not on his dime).
He mentioned building the bra into the little dancing tops (the gold one behind me here has underwire and padding), sewing in the shapewear (yes, even for some of the guys) and wearing fishnets as opposed to other hosiery so that the skin to shoe contact helps dancers from slipping out of their shoes. He uses tons of Topstick (the original heavy duty fashion tape) and also glue when sticking the shoes on just before the big dance is necessary!
Do you know the celebs only get to rehearse in their costumes for two hours prior to going live? Randall and his team are busy doing last minute fix-ups before each show if he sees too much “cha cha” going on in the bustline and not in the feet!
