In only 10 years, Spanx has single-handedly created a whole new market in women’s fashion. The word has become synonymous with shapewear, to the point that when most women want to find shapewear, they simply Google the word Spanx.
Like most women, I’ve been known to have my own arsenal of the product. Working as a stylist for Oprah, Lucky and other magazines, I have always carted my trunk of Spanx to and from photo shoots with A-list celebrities. Even though I’ve been a brand ambassador for years, I never had a chance to spend time with Sara Blakely, the creator of Spanx, until now.
Sara was in town for the opening of her first Spanx Shop, inside New York’s 59th Street Bloomingdale’s store. I met her there and we had a great one on one chat about her life and her success. I was very impressed with the shop, which makes you feel like you’re a celebrity in Hollywood about to walk the red carpet under the blazing lights. There’s an incredible, custom-made Tower of Power which houses favorite products broken down by size. It was amazing to be there in person to touch, feel and try on all of their new products with the help of expert Spanx specialists.
En route to the meeting we saw a tweet from Sara’s husband congratulating her on her first store opening. The profile picture was Sara’s husband and son sleeping in the back of the car. It was nice to see something so personal from a woman we all consider our friend. I asked her how with all of her success she has stayed so “normal”? Sara replied, “Am I normal? I don’t know how to be any other way.” There it was….one of the main reasons for Sara’s success…her likability.
We had a great chat and took some fun pictures as I got Sara’s personal tour of the shop. As I was leaving, Sara even hinted at a few new things in the works. Spanx often promises “Don’t worry, we’ve got your butt covered!”. The good news is they have lots of other things covered, and the ideas just keep on coming.
