In search of the perfect pregnancy jean, I teamed up with the ladies at Destination Maternity. We met up in their fabulous NYC store, which is the mecca of shopping for pregnant ladies. Upon hitting the six month mark, I had to admit it was time to make a few wardrobe investments for my newly growing (and expanding) body. I had already purchased new bras, undies and tights, but I was surviving in dresses and leggings until now.
Understanding that finding a great jean is a major commitment for women who are or aren’t pregnant, I was on a mission to try on as many as I could to find a winner. I tried on high-end, low-end and everything in between ranging in a few sizes and colors/washes. The overall verdict is that a dark, clean wash is the most flattering (as always), it’s worth investing in one expensive pair (sorry, they just looked so much better!) and that sticking with your usual style (skinny for me) makes you look and feel like yourself.
I found four winners, which is pretty amazing considering how hard it can be to find great jeans. It just goes to show you that when you go on a mission (and have time, patience and great sales help) that you can find what you need at the right store. Here are my picks for best maternity jeans:
1 -AG Jeans Secret Fit Belly 5 Pocket Maternity Jeans were my all around favorite. The fit was just perfect on me and without lifting my shirt, you would never know they were maternity jeans at all.
2 -Joe’s Chelsea Skinny leg jeans-These colored jeans may not be your everyday jean, but they are a great alternative to the dark blues and blacks. If you’re pregnant through spring and summer, these are a perfect warm weather pant to help liven up a maternity wardrobe.
3 –J Brand Secret Fit Belly Stretch Fabric Maternity Jeans feel like a legging, but look like a jean. Super comfortable fabric and wash, these will get a lot of use in my wardrobe.
4 -Sold Design Lab Secret Fit Belly 5 pocket Maternity Jeans were a great skinny, stylish, comfy jean for work or play.
Head to a Destination Maternity store in person if you can (or their Motherhood or A Pea in the Pod stores), or order a few online to try. I recommend ordering your pre-pregnancy size, and doing so in your 3rd or 4th month when you start to need belly relief. You will get a long life out of these jeans pre and post-baby.
