I once worked with a woman who confessed to having to leave her shapewear in the trash can of a fabulous NYC restaurant’s bathroom because she knew she was about to get lucky, and did not want the guy to see that she was wearing a girdle. Stories like this always remind me of that moment in Bridget Jones Diary where Renee Zellweger’s character gets busted by Hugh Grant’s. He acts as if her girdle is sexy…but we all know he just wanted to keep the mojo going.
As a gift to all of the women out there who love shapewear, intimates brands are finally listening to our cries to make shapewear beautiful. I mean if we’re going to spend the money on these sausage-casing garments, why shouldn’t we look hot and feel good wearing them?
The best example of how far we’ve come is with La Perla’s new Shape Couture line. It looks more Mad Men then Christina Hendricks’ pencil skirts, and the sexy seaming shapes you in all of the right places. I love the under-bust slip to wear under dresses, for day or for night.
The Sassybax Pretty Collection (aptly named) is the perfect wearable combination of shapewear and lace. I love the cami with its built in bra to wear under evening looks or peeking out from under a little cardigan.
Body Wrap offers a great mix of colors and prints in their lightweight Sheer Iridesscent line. It’s mesh in the areas that don’t need shaping making it more light and breathable than most compression garments. I love the Sculpt & Shape Bodysuit with jeans and any top.
Felina’s new shaping line offers a high waisted brief that looks retro and sexy while giving great tummy support. It’s a perfect shaping panty to wear to work under pants or skirts.
Cosabella’s Never Say Never group is also gorgeous, especially the Sexy Shaper Teddy Camisole. Nobody would ever know this was a shaping piece, not even Hugh Grant’s smarmy Daniel Cleaver. These pieces are sexy and beautiful, slimming and flattering, and will never find their way into a bathroom trash can.
