Most of us fondly remember our very first bra. It was new and exciting, and wearing it for the first time was empowering! Take my friend Debi, who talked her mother into buying her not the standard white training bra, but one that was covered with bright splashes of hot pink, orange, and green. She’d insisted on wearing it under a sheer white blouse to a co-ed party that night. It was pretty, and Deb was proud and confident though her girlfriends were mortified. To this day, she still doesn’t see why. This is why we love the Debs of the world.
Or how about my colleague, Anise, who was so excited about her white training bra (keep in mind Anise has had a breast reduction, so her ever needing a “training” bra is difficult to picture) that she rushed down the block to show her male cousin!
And then there’s my older sister, Helen, who had the bra and simply wanted the breasts to go along with it, so she lifted our mother’s foam falsies, stuffed them into her ill-fitting bra, and strutted her stuff down the halls of Catholic school. She was brighter than I. Thinking I was runway material and that no one would be the wiser, I stuffed my bra with Kleenex. This proved an embarrassing failure, as my ruse was discovered when the tissues slipped out. A couple of boys pointed this out to everyone and guffawed!
Ever supportive, my girlfriends encouraged me to just use the tissues to wipe my tears and runny nose and go forth with confidence. It reminds me of a quote from Madeline Albright: “There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women.”* Here’s to those girls who had my back…er, front, back then.
